Heavy Water Treatment Facility

The project involved the construction of a concrete tower to house the future heavy water distillation system for the opal reactor.

The works were of a special design and compliant to the ACI 349_06 Code Requirement for Nuclear Safety-Related Concrete Structures. As part of the construction, specialized pressure sealed doors were installed at all entries this was to ensure that the heavier isotopes of the deuterium would be contained within the structure as a safety fail safe measure should a failure occur in the distillation system.

To work within the ANSTO premises, a high level of security needed to be adhered to, the actual works occurred within the ultra-high security section alongside the opal reactor.
